Andor Gyulai has a clear goal: to develop future Olympians.
A seasoned volleyball player and coach, Gyulai co-founded Volleyball1on1 in 2009, an online platform that shares insights from some of the sport’s top professionals. These days, he and his wife, Vanessa Summers-Gyulai, operate a volleyball camp in Nocatee.
Now, they’re looking to take things to the next level with a state-of-the-art facility in St. Johns County.
“When we moved here, we saw an opportunity,” Gyulai told the Business Journal. “Instead of kids having to relocate to attend boarding schools for elite training, we wanted to offer world-class coaching right here—while they still attend top schools in Florida.”
The planned indoor complex will span 18,000 square feet, located at 6940 U.S. 1 North, roughly four miles from the St. Augustine Airport and adjacent to Dog Town USA. The Gyulais purchased the nearly two-acre property for $1.3 million on April 29. While permits are still in progress, they hope to begin construction soon.
“This is going to be an academy,” Gyulai said. “Right now, a lot of families are driving 45 minutes just to find quality indoor volleyball training. We want to fill that gap and meet the demand.”
They aim to have the facility ready by May 2026, with construction taking eight to ten months. Gyulai also heads the St. Johns Volleyball Club, which offers summer camps in Nocatee and Fruit Cove.
Beach volleyball has seen a major surge in recent years. The Paris 2024 Olympics even featured a striking visual of the sport being played with the Eiffel Tower in the background.
In fact, women’s college beach volleyball programs have grown by 148% in the last decade—rising from 39 teams in 2013-14 to 97 in 2023-24, according to NCAA data.
Now living in Ponte Vedra Beach, Gyulai hopes his new facility becomes a premier destination for the sport: “Our mission is to bring top-tier volleyball coaching to this area.”
